Tim Tebow’s struggle to impress NFL could hurt Gators in recruiting

Obviously not part of the preparation is Florida head coach Urban Meyer. In four years under Meyer, Tebow said he’d “never been asked to shorten or quicken my release and not have a loop in it.” You will hear some argue that Meyer is to blame for not doing a better job preparing Tebow for the NFL. But the truth is that Meyer’s only responsibility was to win games for his employer, the University of Florida. And he certainly did that. There is a lesson here, however, for young quarterbacks who envision themselves having the chance to play in the NFL one day: look around for a coach who runs an NFL-style offense, and coaches quarterbacks to play with NFL-style mechanics. – Birmingham News

Never one to sell his own players short, Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh called redshirt freshman Andrew Luck “the best quarterback in the country” Tuesday. “I think Andrew is the best quarterback in the country. I’ve not seen a better one,” Harbaugh said. Asked specifically if he felt Luck was superior to Florida’s Tim Tebow, last season’s Heisman Trophy winner, or Texas’ Colt McCoy, Harbaugh repeated, “I have not seen a better quarterback out there.” – San Francisco Chronicle
Tim Tebow says he missed post-game media session for friends

Florida QB Tim Tebow said offensive frustration wasn’t the reason he failed to conduct a post-game interview after Saturday’s win over Mississippi State. Seeing old friends and attending a post-game team meeting took precedence. “There was a lot of other things I wanted to do,” Tebow said. “Not that this isn’t important. I’ve always been very courteous to do that. And I’m sorry I didn’t see y’all. But I wanted to see coach (Dan) Mullen. I wanted to go see my family, I had a lot of friends at the game … We were in meetings for a little bit after the game there talking. It’s not like we got out quickly either.” This was Tebow’s first post-game snub as a healthy Gators starter. – Orlando Sentinel
Urban Meyer: Tebow has no chemistry issues with Gators WR’s

Urban Meyer said Tim Tebow has no chemistry issues with wide receivers and will his keep his confidence high because he’s a “very mature, grown man.” “As ironic as it is, last week was one of our best weeks throwing the ball in practice,” Meyer said. In the offseason, Tebow worked with new quarterbacks coach Scot Loeffler, while implementing an under-center package for Tebow. Despite one under-center play Saturday resulting in a 9-yard Chris Rainey touchdown rush, nothing has looked different in Tebow’s quarterbacking style — except maybe more rushes. Tebow’s throwing windup is still long, and defensive backfield pressure of late has forced him into errant throws off balance or off his back foot. He has rushed the ball 106 times the last five games. – Orlando Sentinel
Does Tim Tebow deserve Heisman mention?

Maybe even to think it, given how great he has been for his team, his sport and his faith. But the truth is, Tim Tebow isn’t deserving of all this Heisman talk. Not this year, anyway. Not when he’s having an ordinary season on a team that hasn’t lived up to expectations. – Miami Herald

Sunday, Fox’s Jimmy Johnson suggested how Florida star Tim Tebow could remain a TV star in coming years, saying “the key” to the quarterback in the NFL would be for the team drafting him to hire Gators coach Urban Meyer so Tebow could stay in his college offense since he “is not going to fit in with a pro-style offense.” – USA Today

Florida coach Urban Meyer and his staff spent Sunday searching for answers to the growing problems that are plaguing the Gators, most notably turnovers, sacks and a lackluster offense, as they prepare to face Mississippi State this week. The Gators are 67th in Division I-A in passing offense (210.67) and 74th in sacks allowed. QB Tim Tebow was sacked four times. The Gators are currently scoring about 50 percent of the time in the red zone. – St. Petersburg Times
Tim Tebow a “fourth-round fullback?”

Nobody is rooting more for the Wildcat to be effective in the NFL this season than Tim Tebow. If it takes off, so will the University of Florida quarterback’s draft stock. “I talked to at least five NFL people the other day and Tebow’s name came up,” said NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock. “It’s almost like the NFL is split right down the middle on him. There are some guys that say, ‘Wow, he’s so special. He has to be a first-round pick and you have to figure out a way to make him your quarterback.’ “But there are other people that say, ‘No, I’m not changing my whole offense to accommodate one guy. What if he gets hurt? Then you need another guy just like him behind him. And if he’s not a full-time quarterback, where do you draft him? What does he play? How does he fit in?’ I have some guys saying he’s a third- or fourth-round fullback.” – Philadelphia Daily News
SEC coaches defend Urban Meyer

While the debate continues over whether Florida quarterback Tim Tebow should already have been out of the game when he was injured against Kentucky last week, coaches of several of the Gators’ biggest SEC rivals defended Florida coach Urban Meyer on Wednesday, saying they don’t see a problem with Tebow or other starters still being on the field with a 24-point lead. “I think obviously this is about whether Tim Tebow should have been in the game or shouldn’t have been in the game, but 31-7 in the third quarter is not a game that’s out of reach,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said. LSU coach Les Miles said a head coach has to make the best decision for his team, players and what he feels is best to win the game. – St. Petersburg Times

Florida QB Tim Tebow is taking one class, a senior seminar. He joked it will cost him a lot of practice time. In reality, the 2007 Heisman winner is soaking in his last go-around as a Gator. “I’ve thought about it a lot, that’s for sure,” Tebow said. “It’s exciting. I’ve got one more season, seven opportunities to run out of that tunnel (for home games).” – Florida Today
